Bernstein honoured but no New Year knighthood for ‘King David’

January 2 – Reports that David Beckham could receive a knighthood proved completely unfounded when the former England captain and global footballing icon was omitted from the traditional New Year royal awards list.

Beckham, who retired last May, already has an OBE for services to the game and although he has become one of the world’s most respected sporting ambassadors, any chance of a knighthood went into extra time metaphorically speaking.

Figures in all walks of life are nominated for their achievements by members of the public and whether they are given an honour is decided by a committee whose decision goes to the prime minister and then to the Queen.

Meanwhile, former Football Association chairman David Bernstein was made a CBE. Bernstein was appointed in 2010 but was forced to relinquish the post under FA rules when he reached the age of 70 and was replaced by Greg Dyke in July. “I think this honour relates to all my 20 years in football and I am really delighted,” said Bernstein.
