Camping in Rio

January 16 – Fans who are being priced out of attending the Brazil World Cup because of the high rates of accommodation should take a look at a campsite option launched by two Englishmen in Recreio, in the west of Rio de Janeiro. For £35 a day per person, campers can turn up and get the full World Cup experience in one of Rio’s safer districts and in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

World Cup Camping Rio (www.worldcupcampingrio.com) has launched a purpose built campsite that will hold 800 people. Designed for international football supporters, the site is already taking bookings.

Set up by two Andy Allan and Stephen Pike, the site provides fans with tents, a bbq area and two cafes selling Brazilian and European food in case fans do not want to take cooking equipment.

The campsite is protected by 24-hour professional security, and has bars, TV screens showing live games and entertainment. There is an onsite swimming pool, site shop and shower and toilet facilities.

Rio is known for its poor transport links but the new Rio Travel rail link is a 10-minute walk from the site and makes travel around an often gridlocked city more manageable.

World Cup Camping Rio will be also be offering match-day travel to the other participating WC cities so that supporters can use Rio as a base. The campsite organisers say they will offer supporters an affordable and direct travel option enabling them to get to their team games.

“We are aware that potential visitors to Brazil could be put off by security concerns. Having lived in the City for over 10 years now, my experience of the local people has always been warm and welcoming and their passion for football is legendary,” said Allan.

“One of the key reasons we chose Recreio is because it is considered one of the safest districts in the city, has excellent transport links and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. We feel we have a lot to offer anyone who wants to come and experience the unique atmosphere of a World Cup in Brazil. We are open to the global family of football supporters and everybody is welcome to come and join in what promises to be a fantastic event.”

World Cup Camping opens its gates to the public at 10am on June 8 and close at 4 pm on July 15 2014.
