February 11 – Police in Kenya are hunting a murder suspect after a Liverpool supporter was stabbed to death by a rival Arsenal fan following last weekend’s 5-1 Premier League win by the Merseyside club.
Police in the north eastern region of Meru said the two were watching on television and “the assailant and the deceased had a bitter argument over the match”.
Like most African football fans, Kenyans are fanatical about the English game which is broadcast in bars and restaurants with many supporters congregating in replica kits. During matches fans often bet on the outcome.
This is not the first time that such support has ended in tragedy. A Manchester United follower in the capital Nairobi committed suicide last year after his team lost to Newcastle. And in 2009, an Arsenal fan hanged himself after the Londoners lost to United in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals.
