Fabrice Muamba

February 21 – Fabrice Muamba, the former Premier League footballer who was forced to give up playing after suffering a massive cardiac arrest during a cup match just under two years ago and whose plight made worldwide headlines, is among the speakers at special conference on football and medicine being held in the Jordanian capital of Amman on Saturday.

Muamba will be joined by Dr. Andrew Deaner, the British cardiologist praised for saving his life, and by FIFA medical chief Michel d’Hooghe at the round-table conference chaired by FIFA vice-president Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein and organised by the Asian Football Development Project, a non-profit youth commission founded by Prince Ali.

Saturday’s summit, entitled Qusai Khawaldeh – Football and Medicine, the way forward in Asia follows the death of Khawaldeh, a young Jordanian Under-22 national team player who tragically lost his life after collapsing during a game in Jordan and whose case served as a wake-up call across the entire continent.

The discussions will address the challenges football associations and clubs in Asia face when medical emergencies occur, with Muamba, the former Bolton Wanderers player who made a miraculous recovery even though his heart stopped beating for 78 minutes, taking a leading role in the debate.
