March 10 – FIFA executive committee member Worawi Makudi’s controversial re-election as head of Thailand’s FA (FAT) is being taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Last October after months of in-fighting about election rules, Makudi defeated former national team manager Virach Chanpanich 42-28 in a secret ballot.
Shortly afterwards a five-member commission appointed to oversee the election but which Makudi supporters said had no jurisdiction refused to approve his victory. Makudi continued as FAT president but now CAS will hear an appeal by Chanpanich March 25-26.
Makudi has been FAT president since 2007 but has long been embroiled in controversy both at home and overseas.
More than once he has had to defend himself against allegations of wrongdoing during his lengthy career in football administration and last year was comprehensively beaten by Sheikh Salman Bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa in the race to become President of the Asian Football Confederation. Makudi received only seven votes after being deserted by many within his own south-east Asian bloc.
