March 11 – Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness said he “deeply regretted” his conduct on the opening day of his high-profile trial for tax evasion.
Hoeness, one of the best-known figures in German football as player, manager and administrator, admitted to evading millions of euros in taxes through an undeclared Swiss bank account.
Addressing the Munich court, the former World Cup winner spoke of his satisfaction that all details were “transparently on the table.”
He admitted in court to defrauding Germany’s tax authorities of 18m euros and added: “I deeply regret my wrongdoing. I will do everything necessary to ensure that this depressing chapter for me is closed.”
Last May Bayern turned down an offer of resignation from Hoeness who has been associated with the club for two generations.
A verdict is expected on Thursday and if found guilty, Hoeness faces anything from a fine to 10 years in prison though the prosecution says it will seek a seven-year sentence.
