March 20 – Despite their excellent 2-1 win at Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, Zenit St Petersburg are likely to be in hot water with UEFA once again, following the behaviour of their fans in the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie in Germany.
During the match, followers of Zenit stole a German flag, which belonged to the Borussia Dortmund supporters, which they then preceeded to set on fire. The German press says that UEFA could open a disciplinary case against the side from Russia’s second city.
This will not the first time that Zenit St. Petersburg have been in trouble with UEFA. The club played their last home game against Borussia Dortmund last month, with a section behind the goal at the Petrovsky Stadium closed for supporters.
These sanctions were implemented due to Zenit fans throwing flares at Austria Vienna supporters during the club’s final group stage game in December 2014.
