April 3 – Uruguayan President Jose Mujica has backtracked over his decision to withdraw policing at domestic matches, a move that led to the entire board of national football federation resigning.
Mujica said he could not expect clubs to hire private security firms following a meeting with club and players’ union officials in Montevideo.
Mujica, fed up with violence among fans of Penarol and Nacional, had withdrawn policing from their matches at the weekend.
Fears that FIFA might suspend Uruguay form the World Cup because of government interference in the country’s football affairs have proved unfounded but there is still no word as to whether fresh administrative leadership will be in place to take the country to Brazil. Uruguayan Football Association President Sebastian Bauza was one of those who resigned.
