May 8 – Louis van Gaal, Holland’s coach at the World Cup, has given the broadest hint yet that he will succeed David Moyes as the next full-time boss of Manchester United.
Van Gaal was tracked down by the British media at the Dutch training camp and declared he would “love the job” and was waiting for the club to confirm his appointment.
“I hope that I shall be the one,” said van Gaal, who has won trophies with Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. “You [the media] are thinking I’m the man, but the most important thing is whether Manchester United are thinking that.”
It is understood the 62-year-old will be publicly confirmed as United’s permanent new manager soon after the end of the Premier League season on Sunday, taking over from Ryan Giggs who was put in temporary charge following Moyes’ sacking.
United are on course to finish seventh, which will equal the worst defence of a Premier League title since Blackburn Rovers in 1995-96, and Van Gaal would not be able to take charge until the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign in Brazil ends.
