May 21- Bloomberg have released their ‘BSports Power 50’ ranking of the top European footballers over the 2013/14 season. Liverpool’s Luis Suarez tops the ranking while, not surprisingly, Spain’s Atlético de Madrid were the top represented club with eight players in the top 50.
There were top five places for Messi, Ibrahmovic and Ronaldo, but five of the top 10 ranked players will not be on show at the World Cup in Brazil. Of the top 50, a remarkable 17 players will not be at the finals.
The rankings are a data-driven analysis of individual player performance across Europe’s leading five leagues: Serie A (Italy), Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain), Bundesliga (Germany), Ligue 1 (France). ·
The Bloomberg rankings evaluates players in their playing positions and takes into account opponent strength in each game throughout the season. The analysis covers more than 100 types of player actions, leading to about 1,000 to 1,500 data points for each player per match. The data then generates a BSports Rating (BSR).
The BSR includes evaluations on the defensive performance of a player and includes the performance of the defensive unit as a whole. For attacking players, the emphasis is on a player’s effectiveness and efficiency in passing, creativity, shooting and scoring.
