May 30 – Zulte-Waregem has launched a construction project to modernise and expand its Regenboogs stadium in the Belgian city of Waregem. Zule-Waregem finished the Jupiler League in fourth place, beaten by RSC Anderlecht, Standard Liege and FC Bruges.
The fourth place finish means the club will compete in the qualifiers for European cups this year. The stadium investment is a result of Zulte-Waregem’s European ambitions.
Due to the shortcomings of the facility, last season Zulte-Wareegem played their home games in neighbouring Bruges.
The expanded stadium will be fitted with a seating capacity of 13,000, which would represent a significant increase compared with its current capacity.
The facility’s main stand is fitted with some 4,004 seats, including 355 seats in the Inside Business sector, while its second stand is fitted with a further 1,421 seats, and third stand with 1,805 seats. This provides Regenboogs stadium with an aggregate capacity of 9,289.
The project also aims to expand the number of parking spaces for spectators. The cost of the stadium improvement has not been released.
The design of the overhauled stadium was prepared by local architectural firm Goede-froo+Goedefroo Architecten.
This April, the project was approved by the city council of Waregem. Under the plan, the re-furbishment will be completed in 2015.
