Real Madrid leads the way as UEFA pays out €1.1bn to its clubs

UEFA Champions League

By Paul Nicholson
June 26 – UEFA have published figures for revenue distribution to its clubs that competed in the 2013-14 Champions and Europa Leagues. In total more than €1.1 billion in participation and performance related revenue was paid out, with the lion’s share of €904 million going to clubs in the Champions League.

Top of the revenue receiving pile was Champions League winners Real Madrid with €57.4 million, followed by Paris St Germain with €54.4 million and losing Champions League finalist Athletic Madrid with €50 million. Bottom of the money pile was Czech team FC Victoria Plazen with €11.1 million.

The average team pay out for the 32 clubs that qualified for the Champions League was €28.2 million.

The average team pay out for the 48 clubs in the group stages of the Europa League was considerably less at €3.98 million.

Of the €209 million dispersed to teams in the Europa League, €17.7 million was mopped up by teams that had joined the competition after failure to progress through the Champions League group stages.

Juventus and Benfica were the main beneficiaries adding €7 million and €5.3 million respectively to their Champions League hauls.

Leading clubs in the Europa League were Sevilla with €14.61million, Olympique Lyonnais with €10.2 million, Lazio with €9.48 million and Fiorentina with €8.23 million.

Each club is entitled to a minimum payment for participation in the competition (€8.6 million for the CL and €1.3 million for the Europa League), with additional performance bonuses paid for every win or draw in the group stage and each knockout round. Further monies from the market pool are divided according to the proportional value of the national television market allocated to each individual club, among other factors – the clubs from the big markets get more money as a result of the larger revenues generated from their territories..
