July 23 – Croatia’s HNK Rijeka has unveiled the design of its new stadium, with works on the 14,000-seat facility expected to begin by the end of 2014, with completion of the new Kantrida stadium in 2016.
“The Kantrida is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Everything must come to its end, and a new stadium is inevitable,” said Damir Miskovic, chief executive of HNK Rijeka.
The cost of the planned investment in the new stadium was not disclosed by the Croatian side.
The contract for the stadium design was awarded to Italian architect Gino Zavanella whose portfolio includes the stadiums of Italy’s Palermo, Juventus Turin, as well as Bayern Munich. As a result, the interior of Rijeka’s designed stadium reportedly resembles that of the Juventus facility, while its exterior has numerous common points with Bayern’s Allianz Arena.
The architect’s firm GAU Arena is cooperating on the project in Rijeka with local architectural company ZDL Arhitekti.
The new Kantrida will comply with UEFA Category 4 standards. Of the stadium’s 14,000 seats, some 3,000 seats are to be earmarked by the club for the VIP and sponsors zone, while 4,000 seats will be set aside for Rijeka’s Ultras, and a further 1,000 for the family sector.
