August 4 – Moscow’s regional governor Andrei Vorobyov has confirmed that 12 training sites will be upgraded for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The cost of reconstructing the training grounds is estimated at 130 million rubles ($3.6 million) per facility. The news comes days after Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko announced that there would be need for a reduction in the number of stadia to host the 2018 World (12 stadiums in 11 cities), but that there could be a reduction in the number of training facilities built.
To meet FIFA requirements the training grounds will have lighting installed as well as some spectator seating and improved changing room facilities.
Vorobyov pointed towards the legacy of the training facilities as being as important as meeting the requirements of FIFA, saying that if Russia wants to win on the pitch then it needs to have a modern infrastructure for its players off it.
“We love football. We have a program for the development of traditional games. If we want to achieve victories, only one way – to build modern facilities and improve those that do exist,” said Vorobyov.
