August 18 – A survey by the Russian Foundation of Public Opinion found that the overwhelming majority of Russians believe that holding the 2018 World Cup in Russia will promote interest in sport and a healthy lifestyle.
Conducted in early August, the survey polled 1,500 people between the ages of 18-43 from 100 different areas.
According to the survey, 67% men and 51% of women have a positive attitude towards the hosting of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Less than 10% of respondents were negative towards hosting the World Cup.
12% of supporters of the World Cup believe that its main benefit will be that it will increase interest in sports and healthy lifestyle among the country’s youth, and also will help to develop national sports. About 11% believe that the main advantage of holding the World Cup in Russian cities is that it is an opportunity for Russians to watch football without leaving the country. 8% of respondents believe that hosting the 2018 World Cup will increase Russia’s reputation in the world, that it will generate more respect for Russians and improve relations with other countries.
More than a third of Russians (38%) think that the World Cup in Russia will be beneficial to the economy. Such opinion prevails in Moscow (36%) and in the rural areas (37%). However, 28% of respondents think the opposite and believe that the country’s economy will suffer.
Those who have a negative attitude towards Russia hosting the World Cup give their main reason being that it will be a big burden for the government’s budget (5% out of 10% who don’t support the World Cup give this as a primary reason). About 2% of the respondents think that there are other more important areas to invest the money, while 1% said that they don’t like football.
