August 19 – Revealing instances of match-fixing has become an almost daily occurrence in the media but in Malawi a journalist has been sanctioned for allegedly getting involved in manipulation.

Peter Fote, who works for Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, has been handed a one-year suspension from all football-related activities by the Football Association of Malawi for allegedly offering Benin technical information on how they could beat his own country.

The ban includes all reporting and commentating and in a letter to Fote, the FAM added: “Fam is hereby warning you that any breach to this ban stipulation will result in life ban from all football activities and you are seriously warned to desist from this conduct.”

A text that was supposed to be sent by Fote to a Benin official instead went mistakenly to a Malawi FA liaison officer according to reports.

Part of the text, made public in the local media, read: “This is a journalist who travelled with the Malawi team and I just wanted to say may the Almighty God bless you abundantly for helping me. I will, in return, pay you by assisting you with information to beat Malawi at home. Let’s talk, I am ready to do anything for you boss.”
