August 21 – Rwanda’s appeal against being thrown out of the African Cup of Nations over a bizarre case of player identity will take place next Wednesday, August 27, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed.
CAF disqualified Rwanda following a protest by Congo who were re-instated in the qualifying competition for next year’s finals in Morocco. The Congolese Football Federation had complained that Daddy Biori was allowed to play for Rwanda in the first leg of the second round qualifier between the two nations last month even though he had a different name and age in his passport.
Whilst the Rwandan FA maintained that to their knowledge the player had only one identity, investigations revealed that he was called up as Etekiama Agiti Tady to the national team and that the two identities referred to a single person.
Born in Kinshasa, the player reportedly has both Congolese and Rwandan nationalities with different dates of birth.
The Congolese Football Federation (Fecofoot) handed in a complaint to CAF after their 2-0 win over Rwanda in Pointe Noir in July. Rwanda won the return leg by the same score and got through 4-3 on penalties to progress to the qualifying group stage alongside Nigeria, South Africa and Sudan, only to then be disqualified pending their appeal.
