September 2 – Michel Platini has given the strongest hint yet that UEFA may introduce goalline technology at the Euro 2016 finals but remains steadfastly opposed to using it in club competitions.
Platini still believes his system of two extra assistants is preferable but may be open to persuasion following the successful introduction of technology at the World Cup.
Platini says he will take the advice of UEFA refereeing guru Pierluigi Collina, who was one of the world’s most respected officials and is a prominent member of UEFA’s referees committee.
“For the Champions League and Europa League, no,” declared Platini, “because it costs a fortune. But concerning the Euros, I will wait for Mr Collina’s opinion. If goal-line technology allows us to see whether the ball has crossed the line or not, and if we can improve refereeing overall, why not?”
“But you know my position: goal-line technology could lead to technology all over the place. The five referees is wonderful in European competition. And let me remind you that some 35 countries in the world have five referees and only one, England, uses goal-line technology.”
