September 3 – Italy’s leading team on the pitch continues to lead the country’s social media off it, this time with a video skit made on Juventus’ Australian tour using dead-pan Italy star Andrea Pirlo.
A brilliant player who usually looks like he would rather be somewhere else, Pirlo is featured in Sydney sitting on a bench, looking typically disinterested, facing the Sydney Opera House.
Different performers try to win his approval but each fails as Pirlo maintains his stoically miserable face. The skit finishes by passing the challenge on to the online community to see if they can win his approval by sending in their own attempts.
Released August 22, in 10 days the video registered more than 1.5 million views (850,000 on YouTube and 700,000 on Facebook) and the hashtag has had a reach of more than 20 million.
#PirloIsNotImpressed has also been adopted virally by thousands of users in discussions unrelated to football.
Juventus has racked up some impressive social media statistics the Italian football market. On Facebook the club has 13.6 million likes; 1.6 million followers on Twitter (5 profiles but Italy being the core with 1.4 million); 470,000 on Instagram; and 1 million on Google+.
Currently Pirlo has failed to be impressed by any of the user videos sent in, showing the “nice try but better luck next time” attitude he reserved for England in Brazil this summer.
