Moscow builds Wi-Fi bandwidth for 2018 streaming

Mobile phones

September 9 – Moscow’s telecoms operators are gearing up for a streamed 2018 World Cup with task forces dispatched to work out how this can best be done, according to Russian news agency ITAR-TASS.

The plan is for the whole of Moscow to be covered by Wi-Fi, including parks and public areas by 2018. The concern is that currently bandwidth in Moscow would not be great enough to cope with multiple devices streaming live matches.

Called City Wi-Fi, the plan is to build a network that enabled matches to be streamed to mobile phones by both Muscovites and visitors.

It is not clear whether the Wi-FI would be free to access, or would be charged. City authorities are currently consulting with mobile operators on the options available.
