September 15 – With so few black coaches in European football, UEFA have launched a pioneering programme to bring more minorities into the game and develop equal opportunities.
Dubbed Captains of Change, the initiative is designed to open the game at all levels to a wider range of potential administrators regardless of origin and background.
It is open to anyone who works for a national association or UEFA partner organisation, with UEFA helping to finance some of the projects that are launched under the scheme.
“I believe that we are a diverse sport on the field, but more work has to be done to make sure that extends into our administrative and management structures as well,” said UEFA President Michel Platini.
Programme ambassador is French former World Cup winner Christian Karembeu and applications from staff members with novel but practicable ideas on how he/she intends to encourage diversity within his/her organisation’s culture are invited by the end of September, with the pilot project being chosen and announced in October.
