September 25 – Diosgyori VTK is to launch construction of a new 15,000-seat stadium on its current site following the end of the 2014/2015 season. The Hungarian club from the city of Miskolc aims to open the new sports facility in 2016.

The club has unveiled the design of the new stadium which will replace its current stadium that was built in 1939. Under the plan, the project will cost about HUF 6.5 billion (€21 million). Of these, some HUF 2 billion (€6.5 million) is earmarked for setting up of the club’s football academy.

During the construction, DVTK will host their home matches at a different stadium which will provide the side with a seating capacity of about 5,000.

“We will build a … functional stadium. The design should be approved in October,” said Mayor of Miskolc Akos Kriza, as quoted by local daily Nemzeti Sport.

The stadium will host the club’s museum and a fan store, and will comply with UEFA 4 standards.

The Miskolc-based club currently plays in the Nemzeti Bajnoksag I, the top tier of the Hungarian professional football league. The club’s achievements include winning the Hungary championship in 1977 and 1980.

Miskolc is the third largest city in Hungary, preceded by the country’s capital Budapest and Debrecen. Last week Budapest won one of the 13 host city spots for UEFA’s Euro 2020 championships. Games will be played in the new national stadium that is still to be built.
