October 2 – The 188th Cryuff Court will open next week in Terrassa, Spain, the result of donations from the UEFA Charity Award, Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernández, and local partner CaixaBank.
Xavi will open the court alongside Johan Cruyff October 7. The Cruyff Court Xavi Hernández is the first of various European Cruyff Courts which are made possible with the donation of the UEFA Charity Award.
Cruyff Courts are artifical football pitches designed to enable children to play football in safety – encouraging the development of children in a safe environment.
The Johan Cruyff Foundation organises several participation projects on the courts including 6 vs 6 football tournaments and the Cruyff Foundation Community Program.
According to the Cruyff foundation, the projects are designed to focus on more than football, encouraging children to “learn about respect, responsibility and integration through sport. They learn to cooperate, make friends, stand up for themselves and for others, to win and lose. It helps children integrate in their neighbourhoods and their communities, to stay healthy and to focus on some of societies basic values such as team work and respect.”
Each week more than 15,000 young people participate in organised activities on the courts.
