October 14 – Portuguese national coach Fernando Santos has had his eight match ban suspended while his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is considered.
The news comes at the right time for Portugal who face Denmark in their second Euro 2016 qualifier tonight (Tuesday). Portugal had a disastrous start to their qualifying campaign losing 1-0 to Albania.
Santos received the ban and a CHF20,000 (€15,700) fine following an incident at the World Cup in Brazil this summer.
In charge of the Greek team, Santos was banished to the stands in the last 16 play off game against Costa Rica after engaging in a verbal tirade at the referee. The Greeks eventually lost 5-3 on penalties.
By CAS sanctioning an appeal, his original punishment is suspended until the appeal is ruled on.
Santos filed his appeal 3 October. CAS says that it will conduct the appeal on an “expedited basis” and expects to issue a final decision by the end of November 2014.
