October 17 – Pandurii Targu Jiu has announced plans to invest about €15 million to expand and modernise its stadium. The Romanian club is aiming to launch the project in 2015, and carry out the construction over the following 18 months.
Under the plan, the capacity of the club’s Tudor Vladimirescu Municipal Stadium will be expanded from the current 9,200 seats to about 15,000. The sports facility was constructed in 1963, and its last modernisation was carried out in 2011.
Ion Calinoiu, the president of Romania’s Gorj county, said that the investment is to be supported by Romania’s Ministry of Development. He said he expected the project to overhaul and expand the stadium to be approved by the Romanian government shortly.
Set up in 1962, Pandurii Targu Jiu currently plays in the Liga I, the top tier of the Romanian professional football league. The club is based in Targu Jiu, in Romania’s southern Gorj county.
The club’s foremost achievements include securing the championship of Romania’s Liga II in the 2004/2005 season, and its subsequent promotion to the Liga I. Prior to this, the club competed in Romania’s Liga III. Currently the club sits in a relegation threatening 13th position in the 18-team Liga 1 division.
Romanian food company S.C. Success, with its headquarters in Targu Jiu, is the club’s main sponsor.
