October 20 – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has ordered Myanmar to play its next competitive game behind closed doors, suspended for two years, and has fined the national federation $24,000 as a result of a pitch invasion following last week’s 1-0 AFC under-19 Championship quarter-final win over the United Arab Emirates in Yangon.
The AFC’s disciplinary committee found the Myanmar federation accountable for several infringements, including failure to guarantee law and order as well as safety at the venue and improper conduct by spectators.
The game was described by unheralded Myanmar’s German coach Gerd Ziese
as the biggest in a century for a country whose senior team is ranked 143rd in the world.
The MFF has been strongly advised to take “all action necessary to control their spectators in future matches” and warned that any further crowd misconduct will lead to the automatic revocation of the suspended sanction.
In effect, should Myanmar qualify for the final, the match will be played without spectators should further crowd misconduct occur in today’s semis.
