October 23 – A Greek third division club has been heavily sanctioned following the death of a rival fan last month after being attacked.

Irodotos have been docked 15 points and ordered to play 10 matches behind closed doors. In one of the heaviest punishments ever meted out in Greek football, the Cretan club were also banned from all transfer activity until the end of the season and fined €2,500.

Ethnikos fan Kostas Katsoulis suffered serious head injuries during clashes between fans and later died after attempts to bring him out of a coma failed.

As a mark of respect, Greece’s entire top flight Super League programme was suspended during the first week of October by the government, along with all other team sport.
