October 27 – Michel Platini has re-ignited his well-publicised falling-out with FIFA president Sepp Blatter by accusing the veteran Swiss of having stopped serving the cause of football.
Platini recently insisted that Blatter should not run again for the FIFA presidency but at the same time decided he would not contest the leadership of world football in next year’s election.
Now, in an interview with the French sports daily l’Equipe to promote his book Parlons Football, the UEFA boss returns to the subject of Blatter’s time in charge.
“Sepp is not the president of FIFA anymore. He is FIFA,” said Platini. “One must not use football, but serve football.”
UEFA are still debating whether to put forward a candidate for next May’s presidential election but it is looking increasingly unlikely, all the more so given that Platini himself has not ruled out going for the top job in world football some time in the future.
Meanwhile, the 59-year-old Frenchman says he has no regrets for not running against Blatter who seems almost certain to secure a fifth term at next year’s elections. “It was not the time. I do not regret anything. One day maybe. We will see.”
