Chinese company comes to the rescue of Brazil’s Santos

Santos and Huawei

October 30 – Santos have announced the signing of a major sponsorship deal with Chinese technology firm Huawei through to the end of 2014, with the option of an extension.

The new deal is a timely one for Santos, a club with a rich tradition which had been facing financial problems due to match day losses, posting a $20 million loss for 2013.

Santos president Odilio Rodrigues said: “This is an important announcement because we are forming a partnership with one of the world’s biggest technology companies.”

Shenzhen-based Huawei will have its name and logo displayed on the front of Santos’ shirt for the remaining Copa do Brasil and the Brazilian Championship matches.

Jason Zhao, president of Huawei Brazil, said Huawei was drawn to Santos’ rich tradition of producing iconic players like Pele and Neymar, commenting: “Santos is a great city and the home of one of the world’s biggest clubs.”

“Huawei is excited to partner with Santos, one of the biggest clubs in Brazil and in the world. Huawei is a young and dynamic brand, which makes it an ideal partner for Santos in football.”

Although no financial details have been released, the fee is believed to be substantial, and if, as expected, the deal is extended then Santos’ financial stability should be ensured.

Huawei already has deals in place with PSG, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund which it uses to raise awareness of its smartphones.
