FC Zurich head straight to legal after ‘intentional’ stamp puts player out

Yapi-Yapo

November 13 – A Swiss top-flight team have initiated legal proceedings after one of its players suffered a serious injury following a horror tackle by an opponent last weekend.

Gilles Yapi-Yapo, a former Ivory Coast international, was said by FC Zurich to have suffered torn anterior and interior cruciate ligaments, serious cartilage damage, meniscus tear, a torn kneecap and deep bruising in his thigh as a result of the tackle by FC Aarau’s Sandro Wieser – a former team-mate at Basel.

Wieser appeared to stamp down on Yapi-Yapo’s right knee, forcing the 32-year-old to be carried off on in the 19th minute and prompting the FC Zurich president, Ancillo Canepa, to lodge legal proceedings for intentional injury.

Wieser, a Liechtenstein international who was shown a straight red card, apologised via his Facebook page after the match. “I totally regret what happened,” he posted. “There was absolutely no intent on my part. I’ve had a lot of experience with injury and I don’t wish that on anyone.”

FC Zurich say it’s possible Yapi-Yapo might never play again.
