Stadium riot interrupts Italy vs Croatia Euro qualifier, Faroes upset Greeks

San Siro violence

November 17 – UEFA seem certain to take action after the latest incident of crowd trouble to mar a major game on the European stage. Riot police fought with fans at the high-profile Euro 2016 qualifier between Italy and Croatia that ended 1-1 as a flood of flares were hurled down the from stands, enveloping the pitch at the San Siro in thick smoke.

It appeared Croatian fans were largely responsible for the bulk of the trouble. Safety concerns and visibility issues caused a 10-minute stoppage on 70 minutes as the Dutch referee took the players off.

When they returned, Croatia missed a glorious late chance to condemn Italy to a first competitive qualifying loss dating back to 1999. The result means that both Croatia and Italy remain top of Group H, a point clear of Norway.

Meanwhile after one of the greatest upsets in European history, former Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri was fired as coach of Greece, who only a few months ago reached the last 16 at the World Cup and won the Euros in 2004,

Ranieri, who only took over in July, was dismissed following a 1-0 home defeat by the Faroe Islands, one of the minnows of world football whose previous competitive win was in 2011 against Estonia.

Ranieri managed Chelsea between 2000 and 2004 and has since coached Valencia, Parma, Juventus, Roma, Inter Milan and Monaco prior to taking the Greece job.
