Naming rights deal nears for Real’s re-modelled Bernabeu

November 20 – Real Madrid looks set to announce a naming rights deal for stadium after Florentino Perez was caught on camera saying the Bernabeu could soon be called the IPIC Bernabeu or Cepsa Bernabeu.

Last month, Real struck a new deal with Abu Dhabi-based International Petroleum Investment Company to help facilitate a €400 million stadium overhaul.

During an event to announce another sponsorship deal at the stadium on Tuesday, cameras for a TV panel show caught Perez revealing the plan to Community of Madrid minister of education and sports Lucia Figar.

“We are going to put IPIC Bernabéu or whatever they want … or CEPSA Bernabéu,” he was heard to say.

Real have chosen a design led by the German architects GMP for the remodelling of the iconic stadium, which will be revamped to add a new roof and exterior and include a hotel and a shopping centre to help boost revenue.

However, a Madrid court has thrown the plans into doubt by ruling that a deal between Real and the local council, which would allow land adjacent to be incorporated into the project, should be suspended because the European Commission is examining it for possible illegal state aid.
