November 25 – The municipal council of Freiburg has approved the project to build a new stadium for SC Freiburg. The cost is estimated to be about €70 million.

Under the plan, the German football side will build a new sports facility in Wolfswinkel. The project was approved by a majority of 33 out of 43 councillors.

Local media report that, in total, the stadium and related infrastructure investments are to be worth about €108 million.

The stadium will have a seating capacity of 35,000. This would represent a significant increase compared with the club’s current stadium which has a capacity of about 24,000. In addition there will be 2,000 parking spaces for match day spectators.

The day-to-day operations of the facility will be financed by the Freiburg-based side.

The project is yet to be approved in a public referendum, with Freiburg’s citizens scheduled to vote on 1 February 2015. Should the proposal win approval, construction works on the stadium are expected to be completed by 2020.

SC Freiburg plays in the Bundesliga, and currently lies in 14th position in the 18 team league.
