December 2 – Slovakian top tier club has started demolishing work at its stadium to make space for a new ground. The total cost of the redevelopment is estimated to be about €6.3 million.
Under the plan, the new stadium will have a capacity of 10,500 spectators – the current stadium only has a capacity of 4,500. The city of Trencin is supporting the project with a contribution of €2.4 million, while a further €3.9 million will be allocated from the club.
The demolishing work will complete by the end of this year.
Municipal authorities and the Slovak club are currently negotiating the terms of purchasing the land where the new stadium will be located. AS Trencin has made an offer to pay the city €300,000. However, following protests by some of the members of the council, the total amount paid looks likely to increase by a further €250,000 after the stadium is completed.
Set up in 1992 and based in Slovakia’s north-west, AS Trencin currently plays in the Slovak Super Liga, the top tier of the country’s professional football league. The side is owned by former Dutch footballer Tscheu La Ling.
