North Korea dumps Yun and appoints Jo as it heads to Asian Cup

Jo Tong-sop

December 30 – North Korea is reported to have replaced suspended head coach Yun Jong-su with his predecessor Jo Tong-sop (pictured) for next month’s Asian Cup in Australia.

Yun was banned for 12 months by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) earlier this month for “offensive behaviour” after he launched a tirade of abuse at match officials following North Korea’s 1-0 defeat by bitter rivals and hosts South Korea in the Asian Games final in Incheon.

News of Yun’s replacement was reported in South Korea, with the state-run media in the highly secretive North providing no confirmation.

The AFC confirmed that Jo, who was in charge during the 2011 tournament, had been registered as head coach for the January 9-31 event where the North have been drawn alongside Uzbekistan, China and Saudi Arabia.
