Bulgarian football chief accused of tax crimes and issuing a death threat

January 8 – Grisha Ganchev (pictured), a member of the Bulgarian Football Union executive committee and owner of Bulgaria’s Litex Lovech is facing court charges, one of which names him as the leader of an organised crime syndicate.

Ganchev is accused of creating the syndicate for the purpose of tax crimes. The indictment of 200 pages covers the operations of the group from 1 January 2012 to 15 May 2012.

His accomplices in the group are also in court and are named as Daniel Ganchev, Emilia Stanoeva and Milko Dimitrov. They are accused of trying to conceal BGN 711 580.56 (€355 790), of VAT money that would have been due from Litex Commerce JSC by failing to issue invoices.

Grisha Ganchev has also been accused of issuing a death threat to the head of the National Revenue Agency Krasimir Stefanov.

Ganchev is one of the biggest Bulgarian businessmen and except sponsor of Litex, he is a sponsor of various wrestling, boxing, sambo, volleyball and motocross clubs. From April 2007 he has been a member of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee, and from February 2009 he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Bulgarian Football Union.
