January 15 – Italian football is to introduce goalline technology from next season in Serie A after a task force appointed by the Italian Football Association (FIGC) ratified plans for its implementation.
Employed by FIFA at the World Cup in Brazil, goalline technology is already being used successfully in the English Premier League and was recently given the thumbs up by the Bundesliga which had previously resisted it due to costs.
Italian FA chief Carlo Tavecchio said: “I’m convinced that its introduction from the start of next season is inescapable.”
The news was welcomed by the president of the Italian Referee’s Association (AIA) Marcello Nicchi.
“It’s great,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport. “We are in favour. This way if anybody’s going to make a mistake, then it will be a machine because even technology can still get things wrong.”
The issue of technology in Italian football has been highlighted after Udinese’s president accused the Roma coach of manipulating referees after seeing his side beaten 1-0 in controversial circumstances on January 6.
