Greek Super League takes tough line with cash-strapped clubs

Greek Super League

January 30 – The Greek Super League hardened its position on clubs in financial difficulty, dropping Niki Volou from the country’s top league. Rival side OFI Crete has been deducted four matches, and had its upcoming match against Athromitos FC later this week postponed until the club pays off debts owed to two of its former players.

Niki Volou has increasingly struggled to stay financially afloat following its promotion from the country’s second tier Football League last season. The troubled club failed to play its last five league matches as a result of its incapacity to pay its players, triggering a response by the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO).

Earlier this year, OFI had six points deducted over unpaid wages owed to Serbian striker Aleksandar Pesic, who currently plays for Ligue 1’s Toulouse FC in France. The decision was made by the disciplinary committee of the Greek federation following a request for disciplinary action from FIFA.

The financial woes of the two sanctioned clubs have significantly impacted their performance in the 2014/2015 season. Most recently, OFI and Niki Volou were lieing in 17th and 18th in the 18-team table of the Super League.
