February 11 – 1. FC Köln and Germany’s postal operator Deutsche Post have signed a new sponsorship contract that will run through to 2017, with plans to collaborate on jointly introducing a suite of innovative new communications technology products.
“1. FC Köln is perfect for … a partnership aiming for more modern, safer and quicker communications,” said Ralph Wiegand, the chief executive of Deutsche Post’s subsidiary E-POST. “With our E-POST and SIMSme services … we will together develop new product formats and redefine communications.”
The Secure Instant Messenger (SIMSme) is a smartphone application enabling confidential communication.
Alexander Wehrle, the president of 1. FC Köln, said that the club “is very happy that Deutsche Post and E-POST … have chosen to become our exclusive partner. An innovative, professional stance on communications in all new media channels is an important element of our strategy.”
While the amount of the latest contract was not disclosed, it is estimated to be worth up to €1.5 million per year.
The Köln-based club plays in the Bundesliga. It’s 50,000 capacity RheinEnergieStadion hosted games at the 2006 World Cup.
