February 16 – Paris St Germain striker and Swedish national team captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic took his charity support a step further with new tattoos displaying the names of 50 hungry people for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). He removed his shirt after scoring against Caen at the weekend to show the names and raise awareness for the campaign.
The names represent some of the 80 million people currently assisted by the WFP in crisis areas like Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Guniea, Sierra Leone, Cambodia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“Wherever I go people recognise me, call my name, cheer for me,” said Ibrahimovic. “But there are names no-one cares to remember who the WFP cheers for: the 805 million people suffering from hunger in the world today.”
50 of them will be remembered now as the tattoos are permanent. “Each one of the 805 million people has a name, a voice a story to share. Zlatan accepted the challenge and wished to carry their stories on his own skin so that the world does not forget them,” said WFP director for France.
The awareness campaign was supported by the club and the Paris St Germain foundation that reaches about 10,000 children with a variety of programmes in the Paris suburbs annually.
