February 20 – Sofia City Court (SCC) cleared the chairman of the supervisory board of CSKA Sofia, Alexander Tomov, of charges of misappropriation of funds from metallurgical plant Kremikovtsi and the football club. On Monday, prosecutors requested 10 years in prison for Tomov, but Sofia City Court dropped all the charges.

Tomov was accused of siphoning off about BGN 29 million from Kremikovtzi and €3.5 million from CSKA Sofia. The other defendants in the case Alexander Garibov, Ivan Ivanov and Bozhko Bonev, were also acquitted by the court’

The investigation and charging of the four executives is now in its sixth year. Tomov once received a nine year prison sentance from the Sofia City Court, but the decision was annulled by the Court of Appeal. Tomov said on Monday that the prosecution was “unconstitutional” and expressed confidence he would be cleared.

“I can say only one thing – it was very hard, it was very hard because the whole indictment was contrived. I think that in the end everything worked out on its place. This is a great victory for me and my family. It’s hard to talk right now because I’m emotional. This victory will inevitably have a positive impact on CSKA. What is the future of the club? It is clear – we want to become champions of Bulgaria! “said Tomov, after the court had dismissed the charges.
