March 13 – Desperate players at Belarus’ FC Dinamo Brest have taken the unusual step of writing to state authorities pleading for them to pay their unpaid wages. Belarus’ top clubs are struggling to stay afloat financially and for the Dinamo Brest player, the crisis has reached breaking point.

“Our financial problems started at the beginning of the previous season. In 2014, the debt … was from five to eight salaries [per player]. We haven’t received wages at all in 2015,” said the letter addressed to Anatoli Lis, the governor of the country’s region of Brest.

“We do not understand why the Brest region’s leading football club, a veteran of the Belarusian Premier League, is in such a miserable state,” the letter says. “[W]e urge you to provide the necessary financial aid to Dinamo Brest to solve the current difficult situation.”

To date, there has been no official response from the governor. In their letter, the footballers and staff members say that, should their request be ignored, they “will go to court”.

Dinamo competes in the country’s top tier, and its latest achievements include securing the Belarusian Cup in 2007.
