March 17 – English Premier League club Hull City have been given the go-ahead to change their name to Hull Tigers next season – a move that seems bound to infuriate diehard fans of the club.
Last year an attempt at a name change was blocked by the Football Association’s Council but an independent panel has now ruled the club can try again and that the original ruling placed too much emphasis on objections from supporters.
Hull ‘s Egyptian-born owner Assem Allam, who took over the club in 2010 and saved them from administration, wants to change the club’s name to Hull Tigers in order to improve global marketing potential.
The proposal has caused a local outcry with supporters forming a ‘City Till We Die’ group to contest Allam’s controversial plans.
Following the panel’s ruling, Hull issued a statement claiming victory after proving that “the process adopted by the FA was unfair and biased” but it unlikely to be the end of the matter.
