March 24 – Bundesliga chief Christian Seifert has unveiled plans for the German top tier to introduce Monday matchdays. Seifert made his comments during a recent trip to Poland’s capital Warsaw, where he met with the management of the Bundesliga’s Polish counterpart, the Ekstraklasa.

“First of all, this idea is not entirely new. We already have Monday matches in the 2. Bundesliga. Second of all, we need to think about the future and forecast what can happen in a few years. Currently, as much as seven squads from the Bundesliga can compete in the European competitions, of which four can play in Champions League, and three in the Europa League,” Seifert said in an interview with the official website of Poland’s top tier, Ekstraklasa.org.

“UEFA states that Europa League matches can only take place on Thursdays, and, as a result, it is impossible that the same side plays another match on Saturday, which is the most important match day of the week in Germany,” he said.

Under current rules, Sunday matches are earmarked for amateur football in Germany.

“We are currently analysing whether hosting matches on Mondays, as is currently the case of the 2. Bundesliga, could also work for the top tier,” said Siefert.

Opening up a Monday night slot would be a bonus for broadcasters and would help boost the value of the next dowmestic Bundesliga TV deal which Siefert is currently in the early stages of negotiation.
