March 26 – Ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, details of the Hyundai Young Player Award were revealed on Wednesday at the Vancouver International Auto Show.
The winner of the award, will be announced after the final match on July 5 from the best players in the tournament born on or after 1 January 1995.
The winner will be chosen by the FIFA Technical Study Group on the following criteria:
• Exceptional level of skill
• Refreshing and youthful style of play
• Creativity and inspiration
• Tactical maturity and effectiveness
• Fan recognition via impressive performances
• Role model for young footballers
• Positive attitude and advocate for fair-play
FIFA describe the award as serving as “an important motivational link between the senior World Cups and FIFA’s age-group tournaments.”
Steve Milette (Director of Sales, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp) revealed the award and emphasised Hyundai’s pride in being associated with the young talents of the flagship tournament in international women’s football.
The inaugural winner of the award, following the Women’s World Cup in Germany four years ago, was Caitlin Ford of Australia.
