April 8 – English football fans are normally pretty restrained when it comes to protesting about the actions of those who run their clubs.
But supporters of Blackpool, whose team were in the top flight only a few years ago, vented their frustration in no uncertain fashion on Tuesday after the seaside club were relegated to the third tier with more a month of the current campaign to go.
Chairman Karl Oyston was the target of their fury as supporters congregated in front of the directors box before their latest league game and pelted it with eggs, a flare and a smoke bomb.
Fans chanted “Oyston out” and “we’re relegated because of your greed” .
What a far cry from 2009-10 when, in one of the great romantic football stories of recent years, Blackpool reached the Premier League, becoming the first club in English football to have won promotion from every division of the Football League via the playoff system.
