Bad luck of the Irish as Windsor Park close to breaking point

Windsor Park

April 17 – The Irish Football Association has been advised to demolish a damaged stand at the national stadium following a preliminary structural report.

Windsor Park has been closed since cracks were discovered in the stand following last month’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Finland. The venue is scheduled to host another qualifier against Romania on June 13.

Irish FA chief executive Patrick Nelson said no other venue has yet been considered. “We haven’t spoken to anyone yet [about an alternative stadium] but we want to keep the game in Northern Ireland,” he told the BBC.

“If we need to speak to anyone we will do so at an appropriate time. I can assure Northern Ireland fans that we are doing all we can to make the right decision.”

Nelson added to the Belfast Telegraph: “It is a complex report and it takes time to digest and we’ll sit down and decide where we go next based on what we have read so far. We are focused on Plan A at the moment which is to play the game at Windsor Park.”
