April 23 – Despite steering his Bayern side to a stirring 6-1 thrashing of Porto for a 7-4 aggregate Champions League quarterfinal win, Pep Guardiola has fallen foul of UEFA who took exception to a T-shirt he was wearing in the build-up to the game in support of a tragically killed journalist colleague.
Guardiola has been handed a charge for an “incident of non-sporting nature” after wearing the T-shirt at his pre-match press conference with the message ‘Justicia para Topo’, dedicated to Argentine reporter Jorge ‘Topo’ Lopez, who died in a car crash during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Guardiola is accused of breaching UEFA rules on “general principles of conduct,” which forbid the use of “sporting events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature.”
The slogan related to a campaign calling for an investigation into the death of López whose car was reportedly hit by a vehicle carrying two suspected criminals who were being pursued by the police.
