April 24 – Ajax Amsterdam aims to acquire a majority stake in the company operating the Amsterdam ArenA where the side plays its home matches. The Dutch club currently has 13% of the shares in the sports facility, while the municipal authorities of Amsterdam hold a 48% stake.
Under the plan, Ajax will acquire a further 38% of the shares taking the club’s shareholding to 51%, giving it control of the company which operates the Amsterdam ArenA, Stadion Amsterdam N.V. Private investors hold the remaining shares in the stadium operator.
The planned acquisition is currently being debated by the club’s management and supervisory boards for approval. The amount of the deal has not been disclosed by Ajax.
Stadion Amsterdam N.V. says that the financing of the sports facility “has largely been made possible by the contribution of money in the form of capital contributed by eight major limited partners”. These include Philips, Bouwcombinatie Stadion Amsterdam, Grolsch, KPN, Amsterdam RAI, ABN Amro Bank, Coca Cola Nederland, and Stichting Exploitatie Nederlandse Staatsloterij.
The Amsterdam stadium has a capacity of 53,346, and is used by the Dutch national team for international matches.
