April 28 – Saransk, in the Mordovia region of Russia, has announced details of its post-World Cup 2018 legacy programme saying that the 792-room ‘Tavia’ hotel complex will be converted to affordable family apartments after the tournament.

Saransk is building a 40,000 capacity stadium for the World Cup which will be reduced to 28,000 after the event.

The ‘Tavia’ hotel complex is located close to the ground and is being built to accommodate fans during the tournament. The complex will consist of eight high rise buildings and will have 426 rooms in the 4* category and 366 rooms in the 3* category.

After the tournament the buildings will be converted to 200 apartments that will be used for social housing.

“Providing housing for these categories of the population is a very important part of the heritage of the World Cup in 2018. Therefore, you must carefully consider all the financial arrangements of the project, as well as careful analysis of design decisions that after the championship we could with minimal effort to convert hotel rooms as apartments,” said Vladimir Volkov, Head of the Republic of Mordovia.

Volkov said that the final design of the hotel complex would now be accelerated and completed by the end of May, while groundwork at the site will start immediately.
